May 8-12 was a memorable week on Lake Garda with great wind conditions for the Garda Trentino Olympic Week, first leg of the EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup.

There were very competitive races in challenging conditions, ideal for those whose aim is to arrive at the Rio 2016 Olympics in the best possible condition. The regatta is the only occasion to see all the Olympics and Paralympic classes racing together in Italy.

This was the first appearance of the SKUD 18 class in the EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup. Four boats made up the inaugural fleet, with four nations represented.

Alexandra Rickham & Niki Birrell (GBR) won 6 or the 9 races to claim a well deserved victory.  Marco Gualandris & Marta Zanetti (ITA), who train at nearby Gargnano on Lake Garda were second.  In third place was Vera Voorbach (NED) who has returned to the SKUD to sail with Rein Jan van Eseenveld.

Fraglia Vela Riva, the Lega Navale Italiana of Riva, Circolo Vela Arco, Circolo Surf Torbole  and Fraglia Vela Malcesine were united by  Vela Garda Trentino to host  a high level international event which involved athletes from 50 nations and 5 race courses  for 12 Olympic and Paralympic Classes.  The EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup now moves to Medemblik (Netherlands), Weymouth (UK) and Kiel (Germany).
